Your doctor might recommend an upper abdominal ultrasound if you experience the following symptoms:
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Bloating and indigestion
- Unexplained weight loss
Additionally, doctors may advise this ultrasound to monitor treatment progress or screen individuals at risk for certain conditions.
Preparing for an Upper Abdominal Ultrasound
- Fasting: Avoid all food and drinks (including water) for at least 6-8 hours before the exam to ensure the gallbladder is fully distended and clearly visible.
- Inform Your Doctor: Let your doctor know if you have any medical conditions, are pregnant, or have any allergies to medications.
- Wear Loose Clothing: Dress in comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that are easy to remove.
